Terms of Use

Last updated 20 August 2026

These are the terms for using Retold, the app that turns your family's spoken stories into drawn films. They're written in plain English on purpose. By using Retold you're agreeing to them.

The deal

Retold gives you a personal, non-transferable licence to use the app for you and your family. Your first story is free. Keeping more than one story on the shelf needs a Retold Plus subscription.

Subscriptions

Your stories are yours

You own your recordings and the stories made from them. You give us the limited permission we need to store them, process them into films, and show them to the family members you share your shelf with — that's it. We never sell your stories, use them for advertising, or use them to train AI models.

Be decent about recording

Only record people who know they're being recorded and are happy about it. Don't use Retold to record strangers, meetings, phone calls, or anyone who'd mind. You're responsible for having the right to record what you record.

What Retold makes

The drawings are AI-assisted sketches of what the storyteller says. They're deliberately simple, and occasionally the app will mishear a word or draw the wrong thing — a sheep where there should be a dog. That's part of its charm, but it does mean the films are for family enjoyment, not a factual record. The audio recording is always the authoritative version of the story.

Fair use of the service

Don't try to break, reverse-engineer or overload the service, don't use it for anything unlawful, and don't upload content designed to harm others. We can suspend accounts that abuse the service or other people.

Ending things

You can stop using Retold and delete your account at any time — see the privacy policy for what happens to your data (short version: it's deleted). We can end the service with reasonable notice; if we ever do, we'll give you a way to download your recordings first.

The legal bits

Retold is provided “as is”. We work hard to keep it running and to keep your stories safe, but we can't promise it will always be perfect or uninterrupted. To the extent the law allows, our liability is limited to the amount you've paid us in the last 12 months. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't legally be limited, or your statutory rights as a consumer.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes belong to the courts there — though if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you can use your local courts.

Changes

If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before the change applies.
